Default 2013 Founder's Choice Award - McKnight Guitars

2013 Founder's Choice Award - Guitar of the Year

Each year I give this award to the acoustic guitar that stood out to me the most. This year's pick was more difficult thanks to the Healdsburg Guitar Festival, where I sampled expertly-crafted guitars from dozens of artisans and even added a few to my collection. "The McKnight" by McKnight Guitars is this year's choice and one of the finest guitars I've had the pleasure of playing. Almost two years in the making, this guitar was meticulously crafted and documented every step of the way in this build thread. Click here:
http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=265844

I worked with Tim McKnight to create a design that pays homage to the classic 1930's era Gibson L-00, integrating aesthetic elements of their custom maple-body archtops as well. I also asked for a special inlay made from a real shooting star (meteorite), in the shape of a star at the 12th fret. As I'm from Texas, I wanted a lone star made from a meteorite that fell in my home state.

The guitar was crafted using a special "double-back" technique that allows different woods to be used on the inside and the outside of the guitar. In this case, the guitar has the visual appeal of maple but the sound qualities of mahogany, making this guitar closer in sound to the original L-00 design. The top is sitka spruce, the fretboard is ebony, and the neck is mahogany. The elegant finish is the result of much work but the end result is something to behold. I gave Tim a very challenging finish example and he exceeded my expectations. The depth of the color in this finish must be seen in person to be appreciated. The colors are very vivid when onstage and under lights. The satin-finish neck is so comfortable for long periods of play time with no neck drag.

I'm not sure what magic Tim sprinkles into these guitars but this one has a sweetness that is very unique to this instrument. The guitar also very closely and accurately conveys the dynamic that I'm looking to present as a player. In the end, Tim exceeded my expectations with this guitar and it has quickly become a favorite among my collection. And on a personal note, I'd just like to say that Tim and Mary McKnight are two of the best, most kind people I've had the honor of meeting while running the AGF. I'm very glad to own one of Tim's masterpieces and it's really special to me because it has inspired me in my music writing. Here's a little song I wrote with it:

That's a sweet guitar! It was a pleasure to meet Tim, Mary and J.R. at Healdsburg and play a couple of Tim's fine instruments.

Good call, for me that guitar was one of the stand-outs at Healdsburg. Thanks for sharing it so freely at the show, JR. It was a real pleasure playing it for a while.

OK I know the no curse rule....but HOLY CRAP!

In trying to compliment Tim I feel like a a Cub Scout telling Carl Sagan he did a "good job on that space thing".

But here goes:

That is an amazingly beautiful guitar, again. Congratulations on the well-deserved recognition.

This is an award well deserved! And this guitar looks and no doubt sounds like nothing else. What a real beauty this is! I have had the fortune to own one of Tim's guitars for a brief period before being forced to sell it due to an unexpected financial emergency. It was an unsurpassed guitar. My dream is to one day be able to commission Tim to build me another and this one here looks very much like what I have in mind! Congratulations JR and the McKnight team!

Hi JR,

Wow, what a cool looking guitar! Congratulations JR! I would love to play that guitar some day. Just WOW! What a great experience you've described in working with Tim and Mary McKnight. I have heard wonderful things about both of them and have certainly enjoyed and appreciated their comments here on the AGF.
